Birmingham is nicknamed the magic city because it is one of the few places in the world where the raw materials for steel are found together. Steel production is the industry that founded the city and inspired huge population growth in its early years. In more recent history, Birmingham was a notable player in the Civil Rights movement and reform of racial segregation. These heritages provide a rich cultural history that is ever present in many of the monuments, historic districts, and museums around town.
Today Birmingham's major industry is the UAB Medical System which is one of the largest employers in the state. The medical center is home to a medical school and a number of other health professions graduate training programs, including our own, the Medical/Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program.
